This book was excellent in a lot of ways. Well designed, visually exciting, well written, informative. The atlas idea of taking you around to different regions was cool, and the artist's city "maps" throughout were a nice touch. Lots of excellent artists featured and a nice variety of styles and media. However, I have two criticisms for the author. Firstly, the glaring omission of a number of deserving female artists really struck a cord for me. Out of the nearly 100 hundred artists featured, I counted 3 female artists. THREE. They are Swoon, Gold Peg, and Nuria Mora. No mention of Bastardilla, Olek, Clare Rojas, Miss Van or Maya Hayuk, to name a few. Faith47 was mentioned, though only by way of her marriage to Da Least.Another disappointment was the overall western-centric viewpoint taken by the curator. The book focuses entirely on the US, Europe, and South America. The last chapter is dismissively titled "Rest of World," (which coincidentally is just Australia). There is not a single african or middle eastern city or artist featured, and the sole Asian cities featured are Tokyo and Wuhan (though the second I'm not sure why, considering all of Dal East's featured works are located in western cities, not China). So, while I did very much enjoy reading and learning from this book, I came away from it feeling quite disenchanted by the overall lack of cultural and gender heterogeneity. There is definitely a lot missing here. A much more appropriate book title would have been "Western street art sausagefest"
This is a wonderful book that I obviously throughly enjoyed. Not only is there an op art quality that is seductive but the size and quality of the art are equally breath taking. I hope this book brings the same pleasure to you that it brought me. The funny thing about this book is that I opened it thinking I wouldn't like it because I don't like urban 'taggers' who soil the walls and properties of businesses and homes in my city,San Francisco, but instead found samples of government & business sanctioned 'street art' that truly added to the beauty of cities all around the world. I would love to hear from anyone else pro or con on this book.
This was my college class textbook. The murals in this book inspired my work in the class. This book by now is well loved!
So much fun to thumb through and read when I pick it up. It's on my coffee table. Street art is a mixed bag and while I'm not a fan of random graffiti on public property, it has really become an accepted art and is frequently commissioned in my neighborhood in Nashville. The talent that many of these artists have is crazy good.
Recently purchased for my boyfriend's birthday. He's a frequent traveller and has taken more than a few street art tours along his travels. Great comprehensive book with a great balance of imagery and text. Only reason i didn't give a 5 star is I felt there were a few countries/cities with great street art scenes (possibly lesser known but definitely worth writing about) that were missing from the text. Great book overall!
